What is the common sober cold?  Well, it’s having the common cold, running nose, sore-throat, and

being congested… and feeling like the Blues and I call it the “
Sober bug” at full force and dealing with

the fact that I am sober and there are choices I can make which will give me strength while I live my life in

recovery and another sober day.

I had to get use to the fact that there were no more alcohol to replace the over the counter cough

medicine.  This was OK for me, but I also learned to deal with the cold or let me say “Misery” with

moment prayers trough out the day, praying for my Higher Power to remove the pain and misery.  Of

course, dreaming about my parents home cooking, “Chicken noodle soup.”  Yes, again and again, the

cold comes my way, but at the times when I get the strength when I am hit with the “Sober Bug” I surly

make it to a meeting just to say, “Hi my name is Arnold, and I am an Alcoholic and an Addict.”  Wow,

how the moment of being sick just for today soon fills in with comfort of being in a meeting with

support, “that moment I feel pretty good.   But there are times I will make it to the clinic when my temp

gets a little out of hand and then there’s the offer of Cough syrup with codeine, which I like to say “no”

to because the fact is, I am also an addict.

I do understand that there may be a possibility that one day I may need more medicated medication if

the doctor believes it is detrimental to my health if I choose to say, “no” to and that is what it is.

So for me, when I get the common sober cold I surly pray, drink lots of fluid, “Water and Orange

juice, take my vitamins, try to get lots of rest, cry if I need to,  and make it to a meeting…  Yes, a

meeting, not to share my cold because when I have the “Sober Bug” I don’t give hugs… but elbows.

And lastly and mostly, I go home and dream of my parent’s home cooking....
